In inside out we’re immediately introduced to “Joy”. There is no beating around the bush. She gives a monologue outlining the premise: Do you ever look at someone and ask what’s going on inside their head? Well, I know.. I know Rily’s head”…
We zoom right into her head and see Joy being “created”. We’re introduced to the memory idea. Basically the first 7 minutes we’re given the exact premise of the story:
- inside her brain
- Joy, sadness, fear, disgust and anger
- How this whole memory works
- The core memories
- The islands of personality, goofball, friendship, family, etc
Then we’re introduced to the main problem, when she moves.
This makes the story clear and very simple and it’s quiet enjoyable movie to watch.
This approach is taken with both Frozen, Tangled, Moana.
The complex part of the story is just told through a monologue over a montage which tells the story
